Red Feather butter and cheese review
I ordered some samples of both the Red Feather butter and Cheese from MRE depot, I thought I would share my own personal review. I am super picky and would describe my self as an organic foodie.
Butter- IS AWESOME! Tastes and looks just like the butter you get in the grocery store. Maybe a little less salt. Melts perfect on toast and makes yummy french sauces. A fantastic item and I will buy more for sure. :D Cheese- Gag! Eww is all I can say. It you like velveta or fake cheese you'll like this. It comes out looking like a plasticy mess and has the texture and taste of those nasty fake sliced kraft cheeses. In a SHTF scenario I suppose it would do in a pinch, but yucky otherwise. It has an indefinite shelf life, so i'll probably buy a case for 72 hour kits and extreme emergencies, but I won't eat this unless I have to again. :thumpdown |
Re: Red Feather butter and cheese review
I guess we are all different  I didn't like the butter so much. Kind of a funny taste to it. I buy organic butter so not comparing cheapo butter. I liked the cheese. Especially on crackers. I thought it had a fancy cheese taste. Both I think would be great in a pinch as you mentioned.

Re: Red Feather butter and cheese review
Agree the Red Feather butter is top quality, when you melt it, it has more butter fat and less milk solids than fresh grocery store butter.
I haven't tried the Red Feather cheese but I understand it is Bega cheese from Australia...I don't think it is a processed cheese but a cultured cheese. Do a web search for Bega cheese, it is a dairy co-op and they make good cheese. http://www.begacheese.com.au/ |
Re: Red Feather butter and cheese review
RF Butter :top: very good IMO

Cheese(Pasteurized milk, salt, culture, enzyme) Water, Sodium citrate, butter salt, sodium polyphosphate, potassium polyphosphate, sodium phosphate, citric acid, Nisin. So it seems like it started as cheese and then its processed a bit more to make it canable? |

I bought a case of the Kraft canned cheese and a case of the Bega cheese...I prefer the Bega. The Kraft makes a good chili con queso with a can of Rotel, but the bega is better for sandwiches. I keep some of both in my motorhome and use it when traveling. |
Re: Red Feather butter and cheese review
We like the butter, but find the first brand of cheese he offered as described

His site states the Bega is closer to cheddar, and I'm glad to get that confirmed. I hope he still carries it. I liked the products not having color added. |
Re: Red Feather butter and cheese review
I liked both but my wife hates the cheese. She agreed that if thats all the cheese she would get for awhile its eatable.
NOOB |

Re: Red Feather butter and cheese review
Thanks for the review, it reminded me I wanted to buy some. I tried the powdered butter from Walton Feed. It was ok, but I didn't really like it that much. Its probably fine in mashed potatoes or something, but it sort of just tastes like milk to me. I might grab a whole case of the canned butter, though I would not expect it to last forever. My guess is no more then five years like the powdered stuff before it gets an off taste.

Re: Red Feather butter and cheese review
Just wanted to say that I got some of the Red Feather butter and its very good. Better then the butter in the store, though it would be better if it was salted IMO.
One thing though. I'm not so sure it stores as long as some websites claim. I was reading the LDS preparedness manual and it says the manufacturer only claims an 18 month shelf life. Here is the excerpt: "CANNED BUTTER : For those whom only the real thing will do its now possible to find shelf stable real butter. It seems mostly to be sold in those nations where home refrigeration is not as common as it is here in the U.S. As a rule I do not single out suppliers for any given product but at the time of this writing (11/2003) the only U.S. importer of shelf stable canned butter Ive been able to find is Bruce Hopkins Internet Grocer (http:// www.internet-grocer.com). His product is Red Feather brand canned butter from New Zealand. It is salted though not as heavily as most salted butter in the U.S. The manufacturer claims an eighteen month shelf-stable storage life though they do advise keeping it in a cool, dry place. Like all butter it will liquefy it allowed to warm too much. Each can contains twelve ounces (equivalent to about three sticks of butter) and once opened should be handled like any other butter." |

Twenty years from now will the canned butter and cheese be as tasty as the day they were canned? Maybe yes, maybe no. But as survival food, I'm glad they're on my shelf. |
